In the 1998-1999 academic year of the Navoi State Pedagogical Institute, the Faculty of History, the Department of History and Law announced the enrollment of applicants for the specialty “Geography”. As of August 1, 1998, 27 students were accepted on the basis of credits, of which 20 students began their studies on the basis of a grant, 7 students on a contract basis. In the 1999-2000 academic year, 20 students were accepted on a grant basis and 20 students on a contract basis. In the 2000-2001 academic year, the Department of Geography joined the “Faculty of Natural Science and Physical Education”. At the beginning of the 2001-2002 academic year, the Faculty of Natural Sciences was established, and the Department of Geography was included in the Department of Natural Sciences.
At the beginning of the 2002-2003 academic year, a separate department “Geography” was created, and Ph.D., associate professor Yu.B. Rakhmatov was appointed head of the department. At the beginning of September 2011-2012 academic year, the Department of Economic Theory was merged with the Department of Geography and the Department of Fundamentals of Geography and Economic Theory was formed. Since September 2012-2013 academic year, the department “Geography and methods of teaching it” was created. candidate of geographical sciences S.R. Chodiev was appointed leader. From February 2013-2014 academic year, the department was headed by senior lecturer Buranov E.R. Since the 2014-2015 academic year, the department has received the name “Methods of teaching geography”. In the 2015-2017 academic year, the head of the department was the senior lecturer of the department Buranov E.R. Associate Professor B.Kh. Kalonov worked as the head of the department. From April 15, 2019 to the present, Ph.D. S.R. Chodiev works as the head of the department. From the 2021-2022 academic year, the name of the department has been changed to the name of the department “Fundamentals of Geography and Economic Knowledge”.
Currently, 2 professors, 6 associate professors and candidates of sciences, 10 senior teachers and 11 teachers teach at the department “Fundamentals of Geography and Economic Knowledge”. There are 3 areas of undergraduate studies at the department: 60111000 – Fundamentals of geography and economic knowledge, 60112500 – School management, 5112200 – Methods of teaching the basics of economic knowledge and 70530402 – “Geography (on the subject of study)” master’s specialty, training personnel.
